Nature

The U Hamů Natural Monument protects 3.1782 hectares of dry slope with xerothermic vegetation in the cadastral area of Borovec. This includes juniper and greater gentian. The Nad koupalištěm Natural Monument, on the other hand, comprises a mosaic of small-scale habitats shaped by extensive agriculture and characterized by near-natural conditions. It is home to the common spotted orchid, as well as the critically endangered cuckoo orchid and burnt orchid.

The protected U Hamrů area belongs to Štěpánov and is located in the Svratecká hornatina Nature Park.

History and Architectural Heritage

The church in Štěpánov may have been built around 1230; experts date its construction more likely to the period after 1235. Hradisko, above Štěpánov, was fortified as early as the beginning of the region’s settlement. Moats and wall remains have survived from the castle.

A Cubist building was constructed in 1923–1924 based on a design by Prof. Ing. Arch. Miloslav Kopřiva (1894–1968).

The Havírna mining site is an important testament to a medieval mining, processing and settlement complex due to its size and state of preservation. The site contains visible remains of silver-ore mining, as well as remnants of production buildings and probably settlement structures.

Mining and Educational Trails

The small Hornický cechhaus Štěpánov museum presents the area’s mining history and regional geology. It is located in the cellar rooms of one of Štěpánov’s oldest houses and offers an insight into the Štěpánov ore district, which was formerly known for the mining of silver, copper and lead ores. Visits to the Hornický cechhaus must be arranged in advance.

The 14-kilometre Štěpánovský čtyřlístek educational trail starts at the school in Štěpánov nad Svratkou and passes sites connected with the historic mining of non-ferrous ores. Eleven stops provide information about local history, nature and folk architecture.

Rocks and Historic Traces

Vysoká skála is located in the immediate surroundings of Štěpánov. It is an approximately 50-metre-high vertical rock face used by climbers. The most frequently climbed routes on Vysoká skála include Malinová, Osiková, Západní hrana and Plavovláska.

There is also a Second World War bunker in the vicinity of Štěpánov nad Svratkou. The headquarters of the Jermark partisan brigade operated there in 1944–1945.
