Chlumec U Chabařovic: Hotels and Accommodation

The Battle of Chlumec took place on 29 and 30 August 1813 near Chlumec and Přestanov in northern Bohemia.

Culture and History

The Church of St. Havel was built in Chlumec between 1847 and 1852. Its grounds include a surrounding wall with an entrance gate, a bell tower, and the church on a raised spur of land. The church contains figurative Renaissance tombs of the Kölbl family dating from 1606 to 1619.

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity contains wall frescoes from 1691 depicting the Te Deum. It was built to commemorate the averting of the plague epidemic in 1680 and has a floor plan in the shape of an equilateral triangle. Martínkovna documents the original folk architecture of Chlumec.

Memorial Sites

At the eastern edge of Chlumec, at the foot of Horka, stands the monument to the Battle of 1813. It was erected in 1913 to mark the centenary of the battle. The commemorative monument is a 26-metre-high Art Nouveau structure crowned by a lion sculpture.

Since 1992, enthusiasts of the Napoleonic Wars and members of military history associations have gathered at Horka every year on the last Saturday in August for demonstrations of the military history of the period.

Trails and Mobility

The Stations of the Cross begins at the Church of St. Havel and climbs around the basalt hill of Horka to the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. It consists of fourteen sandstone niche chapels.

From Chlumec, an approximately 7-kilometre-long green hiking trail leads past the U Laviček viewpoint and Mravenčí vrch. The 7.5-kilometre-long yellow hiking trail through Chlumec connects memorial sites and other important locations associated with the Battle of Chlumec and leads to Horka and the 1813 commemorative monument.

Chlumec also offers an approximately 4-kilometre-long family route with tasks, puzzles, and a map. Cycle Route 3009 runs directly through Chlumec and is approximately 33 kilometres long. The Podkrušnohorský motoráček stops at Chlumec railway station.

Geographical Setting

The ruins of Hrad Kysperk are located in the immediate vicinity of Chlumec. The area around Chlumec is home to Hrad Střekov Castle, the Osterzgebirge Wildlife Park, Glaberův vrch, Scharspitze, and Kozí vrch. In the wider regional area around Chlumec are Wittigschloß Castle and the ruins of Sukoslav.
