Nature and Geography

Most District encompasses the Krušné hory, the southeastern foothills of České středohoří, the Žatec Plateau and the Most Basin. Its highest point is Loučná, at 956 metres above sea level.

Most Lake is a reclaimed lake created by flooding the former Ležáky lignite mine near Most. The lake covers around 311 hectares, is approximately 2.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide, and reaches a maximum depth of 59 metres.

The Fláje Reservoir is located near Český Jiřetín and was built on the Flájský potok river to supply water. The area around Most District also includes Bořeň [Bílina-Újezd], Vlčí hora, Stropnik and Medvědí Skála.

Zlatník is a 521-metre-high, forested phonolite peak offering views of České středohoří and the Krušné hory.

Trails and Leisure

The Matylda leisure complex in Most has a 39-hectare natural body of water intended for outdoor swimming. It also features cycle paths and a four-kilometre asphalt track for inline skating and cycling.

Culture and History

Most’s late Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was moved 841 metres in 1975 using an unusual relocation technique. It features extensive paintings and sculptures, as well as an exhibition of Gothic and Renaissance art from north-west Bohemia. Alongside the church, Most’s Baroque Hospital and Church of the Holy Spirit form a cultural heritage complex.

Litvínov’s Smetana Street is home to five Art Nouveau houses built between 1901 and 1906, as well as the Church of the Archangel Michael and Voigtovy sady. The Podkrušnohorské Technical Museum focuses on underground and open-pit mining, coal processing and other uses of coal, as well as the chemical industry in the lignite basins of north-west Bohemia.

Osek Monastery is located in the area around Most District. The wider regional area is home to Purschenstein, Sukoslav and Hradek Oltářík.
