Velký Újezd lies at the foot of the Oderské vrchy hills on a gently sloping hillside. The source of the Odra River is located in the surrounding area, about six kilometres from the town. Historically, Velký Újezd lay on an old trade route with a ford between Olomouc and Lipník nad Bečvou. The town has good bus connections.

Hiking Events

A notable hiking event is the Memoriál Jaroslava Švarce. The hiking routes are 6, 10, 17, 25, 35 and 50 kilometres long; the start and finish are at the TJ Sokol sports ground in Velký Újezd. The KČT lists the Memoriál as an IVV and Turistická-200 hiking event. It has been organised every June as a long-distance hiking event since 1968. In addition, TJ Sokol in Velký Újezd has regularly organised an evening march in honour of 28 October since 1976.

Church and Historical Monuments

The Church of St James the Elder is the parish church of the Velký Újezd u Olomouce parish. The Baroque sacred building acquired its present form between 1749 and 1751 and was built according to a design by the architect Mikuláš Thalherr. The Vrchnostenský špitál dates from 1749, while the Poštovní přepřahací stanice dates from 1791. The Chapel of Panny Marie Lurdské is one of Velký Újezd’s cultural monuments.

Traditions and Local Cultural Life

The traditional Velkoújezdské hody festival is always held around 15 August. The Podhoran Theatre Association has staged theatre premieres since 1958. Homemade Tvarůžky cheese was produced in Velký Újezd from 1895; this production ended after the Second World War.
