The region around Olomouc is divided into two distinctly different landscapes: in the north lies the mountainous area around the Jeseníky Mountains, while the south is a flat landscape shaped by Haná. The Morava River flows through the region. In the Jeseníky tourism region, winter ski slopes are also part of the landscape; it is characterised by unspoilt nature, deep forests, mountain lakes, rock formations, waterfalls, summer meadows and winter ski slopes.

Nature

The Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area stretches along the Morava River between Olomouc and Mohelnice as a narrow belt of floodplain forests and meadows. The area includes the publicly accessible Mladečské Caves in the Třesín karst region. The Jeseníky Mountains comprise tundra, glacial cirques, waterfalls, wetlands, mountain streams and historic mountain villages.

The region’s two tourist areas also each have their own character: Haná, also known as Central Moravia, is known for its ethnographic character, while the Jeseníky Mountains are associated with active recreation.

Culture

An outstanding cultural monument in Olomouc is the Holy Trinity Column. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered an outstanding example of Moravian Baroque. Haná is also associated with long-standing cultural traditions and folklore; the Haná Open-Air Museum in Příkazy presents the life of the Haná people.

The region’s cultural heritage includes the accessible Archbishop’s Palace, the Archdiocesan Museum, the Coach Museum in Čechy pod Kosířem and the Regional Museum in Olomouc. Bouzov Castle is recommended as a visitor attraction in the region. Helfštýn Castle combines medieval and modern architecture and hosts, among other events, a show of blacksmithing art.

The hand paper mill has been in continuous operation since 1596 and offers guided tours through a paper museum and the production facilities. Olomoucké syrečky are designated as a local speciality of the Olomouc Region.

Activities

The regional offering includes water parks, natural swimming areas and rafting. There is also an extensive network of cycle paths and ski slopes; castles, chateaux, ruins and museums are located in the same regional area.

From Olomouc, the Moravská stezka follows the Morava River towards Kroměříž or northwards towards Litovelské Pomoraví. In the direction of Litovelské Pomoraví, the route is flat and suitable for families. The Javoříčko Caves feature stalactite and stalagmite formations.

Relaxation

Wellness and spa experiences are associated with the Priessnitz healing springs and the thermal waters of Velké Losiny. Karlova Studánka and Lázně Jeseník are considered notable spas in the region.

Getting Around

Olomouc is an important railway junction; the main railway station is located near the city centre. The Olomouc Region is accessible both by car and by train. The Olomouc Region Card allows cardholders to use public transport free of charge on the tram and bus lines in the city of Olomouc.
