Jeskyně Na Pomezí is the largest cave system in the Czech Republic, formed in crystalline limestone. As the Jeskyně Na Pomezí National Nature Monument (NPP), it is protected across an area of 20.60 hectares. The caves are home to numerous winter colonies of bats; eleven species have been recorded there in total. The Rychlebské hory – Sokolský hřbet Site of Community Importance also includes the cadastral area of Vápenná.
Nature
Another distinctive landscape feature is the Lom Žulový vrch (Brankopy) quarry. The flooded granite quarry forms a pond near the summit of Žulový vrch. From Vápenná, it can be reached via a blue-marked hiking trail approximately 4.5 kilometres long. The quarry offers a view north across the Žulovská pahorkatina hills and towards the church on Boží hora.
The surroundings of Vápenná include Łupkowa, Pośrednia, Czartowiec and Klínový vrch [Skorošice-Horní Skorošice] – each a mountain.
Trails and Landscape
The Latzelova stezka is a nine-kilometre route from Vápenná to Horní Lipová with eight stops. The route through the Rychlebské hory provides information about karst caves, the lives of local people and the processing of rock from the Jeseníky Mountains.
Transport
Vápenná lies on the road and railway connection from Dolní Lipová via Žulová and onwards to Javorník.
History and Culture
The shaft lime kiln in Vápenná, dating from the mid-19th century, is the last surviving evidence of the area's strong lime production tradition.
