Wildstein can be explored through its distinctive historic sites and unusual natural phenomena. Vildštejn Castle is a Romanesque castle dating from around 1200; its visitor route includes a Romanesque chapel first mentioned in writing in 1166. The castle is also home to a fire brigade museum.
Culture
The Skalná Seismological Exhibition explains the study of earthquakes and the measurement of the resulting seismic waves. It also presents the strongest earthquakes in recent history and their consequences.
The Church of St. John the Baptist was founded by the Teutonic Order. The conversion of the originally Gothic church into the Baroque style began between 1705 and 1709. Regular church services are held there.
The Cemetery Church of St. Sebastian was originally a Gothic building from the 14th century. It is listed among the cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. Inside are late Renaissance and early Baroque figural and heraldic tomb monuments of the Wirsberg, Trauttenberg, and Hertenberg families.
History
Among the important sites in Skalná are several buildings in the Cheb half-timbered architectural style. The half-timbered houses mentioned are privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.
After the Skalná estate was divided in 1541, a new farmyard with a Renaissance fortress was built under the rule of the Wirsbergs. The Hornà zámek complex developed from this structure.
The KateÅ™ina museum narrow-gauge railway has a track gauge of 600 mm. The buildings of Starý RybnÃk Castle are currently privately owned; reconstruction and subsequent opening to the public are being prepared.
Nature
In the Soos Nature Reserve near Skalná, mofettes release mineral springs and pure carbon dioxide. The nature reserve is partially accessible to the public via a 1.2 km-long educational boardwalk trail.
