The winter connection of Šediviny is reflected in the Šedivinská 11° event, which took place in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. In this roller-ski race, the course ran along a 1,200-metre-long local road with an elevation gain of 130 metres and finished at St. Joseph’s Church.

Winter and Trails

A red, a yellow and a blue hiking trail marking meet in Šediviny. The Šedivinská osmička, a hiking loop approximately 12 kilometres long, also passes through the village. The described route includes Mount Špičák at around the 8.4-kilometre mark.

In Český Hobitín in the mountain settlement of Šediviny stands a small Hobbit village inspired by Tolkien’s world. Svatoslav Hofman designed and built it himself on a family property. At Český Hobitín, unpaved paths make access difficult with a pram or wheelchair.

Landscape

Šediviny has the village type typical of the Orlické Mountains, with scattered development. The chalets also remain scattered along the slopes. Some former farmsteads in Šediviny can still be identified by groups of old lime trees and remnants of walls. On some meadows near former houses, the anise-scented plant sweet cicely, originally from the Alps, continues to grow.

In the wider regional surroundings of Šediviny lies the prominent 833-metre-high Mount Špičák, which shapes the northwestern foothills of the Orlické Mountains.

Culture and History

The earliest surviving references to Šediviny date from the 16th century. St. Joseph’s Church was built in 1907 as a direct extension of an earlier chapel. It is an Art Nouveau building whose exterior combines fired facing bricks with local gabbro, and it is also a distinctive feature of the Šediviny landscape. The church is located on cycle route 4243.
