Vilamòs: Montlude, Mountain Trails and Culture

Vilamòs provides access to a clearly described mountain route: the linear route from Vilamòs to Montlude (2,517 m) is 11.4 km long, runs between the municipalities of Les and Vilamòs in the Val d’Aran, and includes 640 metres of ascent. It leads along forest roads and high-alpine paths through alpine meadows and black pine forests.

Culture

The Ecomusèu Çò de Joanchiquet presents the traditional Aranese building type known as “auviatge”: a house, barns, a dovecote and a pigsty arranged around an enclosed courtyard. An audio guide with 23 tracks is available for the tour in Aranese, Catalan, Spanish, French and English.

The bell tower of Santa Maria de Vilamòs is one of only two surviving examples of this type of Romanesque bell tower in the Val d’Aran; the other is located at the church of Bossòst. Roman funerary steles are built into the walls of Santa Maria de Vilamòs, several of which are particularly visible from outside in the bell tower.

The Safareig de Vilamòs is a covered complex approximately 20 metres long with a spring, a livestock drinking trough and a washhouse. The year 1775 is engraved on a marble pillar.

A themed route through the old town and its surroundings in Vilamòs uses a total of eight explanatory and visual elements, using these eight elements to highlight traditional occupations and the roles of women in earlier Aranese society. This places architectural evidence, former everyday roles and local tradition side by side to provide context for the history of the village.

In Vilamòs, the “Gòis en aunor de Sant Ròc” are held in honour of Sant Ròc, the patron saint of Vilamòs.
