Isil – Churches, River Island and High-Mountain Route

The Ruta del Camino de la Libertad is approximately 16 kilometres long and leads to the Coll de la Clavera at the French border. It is a high-mountain route with a considerable difference in elevation. After the Spanish Civil War, it was used by Republican exiles fleeing to France and later by French citizens fleeing the Nazi occupation. Culture

Sant Joan d’Isil is a Romanesque church from the 13th century and is recognised as a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional. Today, it is the village cemetery chapel; in the Middle Ages, it was the parish church. Two carved stone panels are set above the portal of Sant Joan d’Isil.

The Falles d’Isil are celebrated in Isil on the night of 23 June, Saint John’s Eve. Their basic structure has remained unchanged for more than 100 years. The tradition is preserved, and lost dances, among other elements, have been revived.

The Noguera Pallaresa River runs through Isil and forms a small island there. The parish church of the Immaculate Conception of Isil stands on the island formed by the Noguera Pallaresa. It has a tall bell tower with a sundial whose shadow projects the outline of a snake.

The Romanesque Puente románico de Isil is a small stone bridge from the 11th or 12th century that crosses the eastern section of the Noguera Pallaresa.

Nature

The Casa del Oso Pardo de los Pirineos is an interpretation centre located in Casa Sastrès in Isil. It is dedicated to protecting the brown bear, its relationship with humans and its integration into the region’s livestock-farming environment. The centre’s building dates from 1825 and, following its renovation, retains its original structure.

The Peixera in Isil is a rocky section of river with clear, shallow water where people swim and play.
