Castellar Del Riu: Mountains, Trails and Cultural Heritage

The Cogulló d'Estela is a 1,869-metre-high limestone mountain visited by many hikers. The Roc d'Auró reaches 1,948 metres and is one of the peaks of the Rasos de Peguera massif. The Serra d'Ensija-Rasos de Peguera forms one of the southernmost distribution limits of alpine vegetation in Catalunya. The different elevations and the combination of mountain landscapes, trails and cultural sites provide you with a clear basis for comparing the various focuses of your trip.

Mountains and Trails

The GR-107 Camí dels Bons Homes runs through Castellar del Riu on the Queralt–Gósol section and can be travelled on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. The Camí d'Avià a Campllong connects with the trail towards Espinalbet at the Collada Gran; historically, it served as a connection between the churches of Sant Vicenç d'Espinalbet and Sant Martí de Coforb. This places a long-distance trail suitable for several modes of transport alongside a historic connecting trail, without implying that they follow the same route.

The Font d'Espinalbet is a restored spring with street furniture at the Torrent de Tagast and is located on the way to the church of Sant Vicenç d'Espinalbet. Demand-responsive transport can be reserved for access to the municipality; stops are located at the town hall and at the Els Roures restaurant. The Xalet-Refugi de Rasos de Peguera offers meals and overnight accommodation.

Culture and Buildings

The Pi de les Tres Branques stands at the Pla de Campllong. It is regarded as a symbol of the Països Catalans and of the Trinity. The Aplec del Pi de les Tres Branques takes place in Campllong on the third Sunday in July. It includes a procession with the Cobla Pirineu, the giant figures from Espinalbet, the Trabucaires de Castellar del Riu, and the entourage of the young Jaume I, Guillem de Montrodon and his children's court.

The Santuari de Corbera is an architectural complex consisting of a church, rectory and former hostel. The Gala de Corbera takes place on the Sunday after 8 September and includes a performance of the Ball de la Coca. Sant Llorenç dels Porxos is a single-nave chapel built on a rocky slope in the Serra dels Lladres; from this location, it offers exceptional views.

Sant Salvador de Vilaverd is a single-nave rectangular church with a semicircular apse. Santa Coloma de Can Cabra is a single-nave church with a rectangular floor plan and is located next to the Masia Can Cabra. The platform of Castell d'Espinalbet is interpreted as a possible base for a defensive tower. Castell d'Espinalbet is listed among the possessions of the troubadour Guillem de Berguedà.

Festivals and Food

The Esmorzar Trabucaire serves black peas, patates emmascarades, tastet, black sausage, bacon and Posima Trabucaire. The Esmorzar Trabucaire is open to everyone and ends with a route to emblematic places in Castellar del Riu. The Festa de Sant Salvador de Vilaverd takes place on 4 August and includes a morning mass followed by the distribution of traditional bread.
