Miawa: History, Nature and Accommodation

Miawa reveals itself through history, regional everyday culture, nature and clearly designated trails. The Gazdovský dvor in Turá Lúka brings together the agricultural past of the Myjava region with an informative exhibition.

Culture

The Gazdovský dvor in Turá Lúka is a permanent exhibition of a typical Kopaničiar homestead from the late 19th century and presents traditional ways of life and housing in the Myjava region. Visitors can tour the Gazdovský dvor with a guide and learn about everyday objects, crafts, the work cycle of the Kopaničiaren and folk costumes.

History

The main exhibition of the SNM – Museum of the Slovak National Councils in Myjava covers almost 170 years of the history of the Slovak people, as well as their struggles for recognition of their independence, self-determination, sovereignty and own statehood. The museum complex also includes the house of Anna Koléniová, where the first Slovak National Council met in 1848. Myjavská veža is the 67-metre-high tower of Myjava’s Tolerance Church, dating from 1785.

In 2014, eight information panels were installed as part of the Historical Tour through Myjava. The panels feature dozens of historical photographs, accompanying texts and overview maps.

Nature

The Myjava River was declared a natural monument in 1996; the protected area also includes the cadastral territory of Myjava. The protected landscape areas CHKO Biele Karpaty and CHKO Malé Karpaty extend into the Myjava area.

Trails

The red-marked 19.1-kilometre E8 hiking section No. 0701h runs from the central orientation point in Myjava via the Museum of the Slovak National Councils to Veľká Javorina and Holubyho chata. The blue 4Cykloregio cycling route, classified as SPORT in terms of difficulty, runs through Brezová pod Bradlom, Košariská, Priepasné, Polianka, Myjava–Turá Lúka, Vrbovce and Chvojnica and is 42.9 kilometres long in the region.

Myjava railway station is approximately a 15-minute walk from the Museum of the Slovak National Councils, and Myjava is connected by rail to Nové Mesto nad Váhom. The SAD bus stop in the centre of Myjava is approximately a five-minute walk from the Museum of the Slovak National Councils.

Events

The three-day International MYJAVA Folklore Festival takes place in Myjava every year in June. The Deň sliviek event at the Gazdovský dvor, held regularly in September, includes, among other things, a brandy tasting, the traditional cooking of plum jam and the preparation of plum dumplings.
