Poluvsie between mountains, Nitra and culture

Poluvsie lies in the Upper Nitra Basin together with the neighbouring municipalities. The village is surrounded by mountain ranges and hills on almost all sides. The Nitra River flows through the municipal area of Poluvsie, as does the smaller Lubená stream, which originates on Zadný diel mountain. The village area therefore brings together a basin setting, a mountain backdrop and various bodies of water.

Poluvsie is also a traditional fruit-growing region with a long-standing tradition of apple cultivation. This agricultural connection adds a local aspect to the landscape, complementing the bodies of water and surrounding mountains as part of the village’s character.

Nature

The old riverbed of the Nitra is also part of the local natural and recreational landscape. People fish there, and Poluvsie is visited relatively frequently by anglers. Another distinctive area is the local marsh. It is a wetland habitat with various plant species, some of them rare, as well as frogs. Fishing also takes place there; in winter, the area serves as a venue for ice hockey.

Culture

The village’s cultural tradition is reflected in music, dance and recurring events. The Lubená folklore group performs traditional songs, dances and customs. Every year, Poluvsie also hosts the Jozef Strečanský memorial event in honour of this collector and folklorist.

At the “V poluskej dedine” folklore festival, visitors can take part in a dance school and try traditional crafts in creative workshops. The programme also includes the opportunity to taste regional specialities prepared by local housewives. The event thus combines dance, handicrafts and regional cuisine in a local festival.

History

The preserved cultural monuments include the “Števke” dwelling house in Poluvsie. It is preserved as a national cultural monument. The building is a simple through-house type and has a lowered attic that was used to store grain or moisture-sensitive goods. The façade features a row of small windows aligned axially with the windows of the residential floor.

The church in Poluvsie is also preserved as a national cultural monument. It was preserved on the site of an earlier 4 × 4 metre Marian chapel and retains the altar from that former chapel.

Geographical location

Road I/64 is important for regional connections. It runs along the Komárno–Nitra–Prievidza–Žilina route, connects Poluvsie to the higher-level transport network and links the Ponitrie region with northern Slovakia, the Turiec region and the upper Váh area.

Experiences

As part of a school-year project, Michal developed an outdoor experience and educational game called “Michalov poklad” in Poluvsie. It complements the local cultural, natural and event offerings with a playful outdoor format.
