Spišská Nová Ves District: Hotels and Accommodation

Nature and Trails

Slovenský raj and its buffer zone have 110 km of marked cycling trails, 65 km of which run through the national park and 45 km through its buffer zone. The cycling route around Slovenský raj forms a loop of around 74 km, starting and ending in Spišská Nová Ves. It begins and ends at the bus station, railway station and car park in Spišská Nová Ves.

Several marked routes connect the district with other places. The Spišská cyklomagistrála connects Hrabušice, Spišské Tomášovce, Smižany, Spišská Nová Ves and Markušovce, then continues towards Spiš Castle and Kežmarok. The Hnilecká cyklomagistrála runs through Mlynky, Hnilec and Nálepkovo.

Culture and History

Spišská Nová Ves District has more than 1,560 registered movable and immovable cultural monuments. There are also three conservation areas: Spišská Nová Ves, Spišské Vlachy and Markušovce. Restored remains of a 14th-century Carthusian monastery can be found at Kláštorisko in Slovenský raj.

The Múzeum Spiša has been located since 1954 in a historic building that was once the medieval town hall in Spišská Nová Ves. The museum also has branch locations with exhibitions in Markušovce and Smižany. The natural history exhibition of the Múzeum Spiša focuses on the plants and animals encountered during walks in this region.

The permanent exhibition of the ethnographic museum in Smižany presents the folk culture of central and lower Spiš from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Its main themes are textiles, clothing and their production.

The Spiš Artists Gallery is located in a historic burgher house in the centre of Spišská Nová Ves, whose history dates back to the second half of the 16th century. It presents 1,898 works of art in three permanent exhibitions.

The Railway Exposition in Spišská Nová Ves features a model railway and an exhibition of train models. Visitors can also try driving a locomotive and working as a train dispatcher, explore a railway communication system, and view images and historical memories of the Košice–Bohumín railway line.

Krompachy is home to the railway blast furnace, known as “maša”, which dates from 1831. Spišské divadlo has operated under this name in the Reduta building since 1992 and has a history spanning more than 40 years.

City Life and Events

Spišský trh is a four-day event based on the market tradition of Spišská Nová Ves dating back to 6 December 1380. Fairground food is also part of the event experience.

Dni mesta Spišská Nová Ves takes place annually at the end of summer. It includes a market of traditional crafts with almost 100 stalls.

Visitors can climb 155 steps to the 87-metre-high tower of the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and enjoy views of Spišská Nová Ves, the surrounding area and the panorama of the High Tatras.
