Matejovce Nad Hornádom

Šikľavá skala is a waterfall that appears in winter as an icefall or ice wall. The waterfall at Šikľavá skala is approximately 14 metres high and 25 to 30 metres wide. Šikľavá skala lies 1.2 km west of Chrasť nad Hornádom along a red-marked cycling tourist route.

Nature

Farská skala is a protected natural monument with the fourth level of protection. Conglomerates and sandstones are exposed at Farská skala; they show the layering and structure of sedimentary rocks. A sign in front of Farská skala provides information about the formation and geological composition of the rock formation.

The Site of European Importance “Vápence v údolí Hornádu” encompasses the cadastral area of Chrasť nad Hornádom. Chrasť nad Hornádom is also included in the cadastral list of the Natura 2000 protected area Volovské vrchy. The Volovské vrchy protected area encompasses coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests.

The description of the natural environment therefore brings together several perspectives: the seasonally changing waterfall, the protected rock formation with its visible sedimentary structure, and the extensive protection designations applying to the municipality’s territory. The types of forest mentioned add a distinct landscape aspect to this geological and natural-environment context. Routes and seasons

A regional route leads from the Chrasť nad Hornádom railway station via Farská skala and the village church to a yellow-marked cycling tourist route. From Chrasť nad Hornádom, a red-marked cycling tourist route also runs past Šikľavá skala towards the Matejovce nad Hornádom railway station.

The route information connects several points of reference in the village and its surroundings: the railway station, village church, Farská skala, Šikľavá skala and the Matejovce nad Hornádom railway station appear in different relationships to one another. The yellow and red markings also remain distinct features. Together with the waterfall’s winter appearance, this creates a combination of seasonal observation of nature and a signposted cycling route network.

Culture and history

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity is a Roman Catholic parish church in Chrasť nad Hornádom. It was originally a Romanesque building with a Byzantine floor plan in the shape of an equal-armed cross. A fresco entitled “Vstávanie Krista z hrobu” has been preserved on the northern interior wall of the tower.

Chrasť nad Hornádom has been documented in written records since the period after 1255; a document from 1280 names the settlement Goroszt or Horoszt. The Slovak academic painter Jozef Hanula lived and worked in Chrasť nad Hornádom for 18 years.

The cultural references thus range from a specific religious building, its architectural form and a preserved fresco to the written history of the locality and the biography of a Slovak academic painter. The dates after 1255 and from 1280 represent different historical points of reference, while Jozef Hanula’s 18 years in Chrasť nad Hornádom document a distinct art-historical connection to the locality.
