Accommodation in Jamník: Church, Settlement History and Community Life

Jamník lies in the southern part of the Hornád Basin, in the valley of the Jamníček stream. The village’s most significant monument is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle. Its history dates back a long way: Jamník itself is first mentioned in medieval documents in 1277, while the church is first mentioned in a historical document from 1305.

Location and Connections

Class II road II/536 forms the main transport route through Jamník and connects Spišská Nová Ves with Spišské Vlachy. In addition, a network of bus routes provides local suburban connections as well as long-distance connections to cities in Slovakia, routed via Spišská Nová Ves or Levoča. Routes within the village have also been adapted: The road next to the church path was widened to improve traffic safety, and a footpath to the church was also built in Jamník.

Culture and History

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle was originally a Gothic building from the beginning of the 14th century. The square tower was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 17th century and topped with a gable attic. After the vault collapsed in 1940, the damaged structure was replaced by a modern building; its reconstruction was completed in 1951. The Church of Saint Bartholomew belongs to the parish of Odorín.

North of the church, a prehistoric settlement already existed in the 3rd millennium BC, during the Late Stone Age, or Neolithic period. It was followed by further settlements from the Late Bronze Age and the Late Roman period. Ceramic finds from the period of the Great Moravian Empire in the areas of Pod dubom, na Nivkách, Pri starej jamníckej ceste and Pri krížiku, as well as remains of kilns at the Panský dvor site, additionally attest to early medieval settlement in Jamník.

Community Life and Events

Regular community life includes Jánske ohne, accompanied by a folk celebration, as well as Stavanie mája during the Pentecost festival. At the 2026 edition of Jamnícke leto on 20 June 2026, a bouncy castle, horse riding, face painting and various entertainment activities were planned for children. A tasting of various kettle-cooked specialities was also planned for the same edition. An earlier event announcement concerned the 7th edition of Jamnícke leto, announced for 30 July 2022 at the OTJ grounds.

Sports and Theatre

The multipurpose sports field in Jamník has an artificial surface and can be used for tennis, ball games and ice hockey in winter. Football is also organised in the village: The football department of OTJ Jamník currently includes five age categories, while the OTJ Jamník men’s team currently plays in the 6th league.

Another cultural tradition is amateur theatre. Traditionally, it presented new theatrical productions at Christmas, on New Year’s Day, during Carnival and at Easter. Performances by the amateur theatre group from Jamník were also presented in surrounding villages and at district amateur theatre competitions.
