Nature and Trails
Lysec is 1,381 m high; its main summit offers panoramic views over this part of the Veľká Fatra.
The via ferrata route to Martinskè hole is 4.8 km long, climbs 780 metres in elevation and takes approximately three hours to ascend. It begins at the terminus of public transport in Martin-Podstráne and ends at the blue hiking trail in the Bazová area, near Martinskè hole.
The Martinské hole cycling route runs via Chata na Martinských holiach from Vrútky to Martin and is 22 km long. It begins in Vrútky and ends in Martin; there is a bus stop, railway station and car park at both endpoints.
Culture and History
There are 274 registered monuments in Martin District. The Andrej Kmeť Museum is located in the first SNM building, dating from 1908. It houses the permanent exhibitions Kmetianum, about the work of Andrej Kmeť, and Príroda Turca. The building was declared a national cultural monument by a regulation of the Government of the Slovak Republic dated 16 August 1994.
The Martin Benka Museum opened in 1972 in the house where the artist spent the last decade of his life. It includes the gallery as well as the artist’s furnished study, studio and bedroom.
The Museum of Czech Culture in Slovakia is located in the house of the prominent figures Jiří Horák and Anna Horáková-Gašparíková. The Museum of Roma Culture in Slovakia is located on the grounds of the Museum of the Slovak Village in Jahodnícke háje.
The SNK Literary Museum is located in the centre of Martin, in the first historic building of Matica slovenská, which was declared a national cultural monument in 1961. A permanent exhibition presents the history of Slovak literature and book culture there.
Sklabiňa Castle can be reached on foot from the village of Sklabinský Podzámok in approximately 15 minutes. After 1320, it became the seat of the Turiec county administration. Events are held at the castle, including a castle festival associated with the historic capture of the castle.
The route to Blatnický Castle begins at the edge of Blatnica and follows a yellow-marked educational trail through the Gaderská Valley.
