Geographical Location

The Žilina District lies in the Žilina Basin. The city of Žilina is located in the Váh Valley in the Žilina Basin landscape; this is where the Váh, Kysuca and Rajčianka rivers meet.

Žilina is an important hub of the railway and motorway networks. Žilina–Dolný Hričov International Airport serves the region in north-western Slovakia.

Culture and History

Budatín Castle is located at the confluence of the Váh and Kysuca rivers. The third floor houses the “History of Žilina” exhibition.

A heritage conservation reserve is located in the centre of Žilina. Its core is Mariánske námestie, with its characteristic burgher houses. The Dom umenia Fatra is an Art Nouveau building and was formerly known as Grand Bio Univerzum. The premiere of the first Slovak film, “Jánošík”, took place there in 1921.

The Rosenfeld Palace is an important Art Nouveau monument from the early 20th century and is reminiscent of Vienna’s Belvedere Palace. Experts consider the Neological Synagogue a unique architectural monument. The Church of Saint Stephen the King in Dolné Rudiny is regarded as Žilina’s oldest monument; its oldest frescoes are almost 800 years old.

The exhibition of folk architecture in Čičmany comprises two wooden houses managed by the Považské múzeum: Radenov dom and Dom č. 42. The exhibition in Radenov dom presents stages of life, customs, work and professional activities, nutrition, the architecture of Čičmany, as well as clothing and textiles.

Wirecraft – craft and art – was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2019.

Strečno Castle is open to the public as a preserved medieval ruin and has been a national cultural monument since 1970. Fragments of František Thurzo’s Renaissance reconstruction of Lietava Castle, dating from 1558 onwards, have survived to this day, including arch attics and remnants of sgraffito decoration. The castle has been abandoned since the mid-18th century and deteriorated over 250 years to a structurally endangered state. At the same time, it is a national cultural monument.

Nature and Trails

Malá Fatra National Park is criss-crossed by numerous marked hiking trails. The range extends from easy walks and ridge hikes to more challenging routes with chains and ladders.

Jánošíkove diery, briefly called Diery, are a system of gorges and canyons in Krivánska Malá Fatra within the Rozsutec National Nature Reserve. The Jánošíkove diery educational trail through Dolné diery and Nové diery includes waterfalls, ladders and wooden footbridges and is also suitable for families with children. It begins in the Biely Potok district; parking is available in front of Hotel Diery.

The Rajecká Valley includes several smaller protected areas and biocentres with rare vegetation.

Thermal Water and Events

Rajecká thermal water is classified as natural healing water with a medium mineral content and as hydrogen carbonate, calcium and magnesium water. The Aphrodite Spa uses the medium-mineralized Rajecká thermal water for drinking treatments; their tradition there dates back historically to the 19th century.

The Aphrodite Water World in Rajecké Teplice has indoor and outdoor pools in which natural healing thermal water with calcium and magnesium ions is used.

The Transport Museum in Rajecké Teplice takes part every year in preparing the Rajecká Anča event with a historic motor train and other transport technology.
