Stráža on the Varínka: Mountains, Nature and Culture

Stráža lies on the eastern edge of the Žilina Basin, in the floodplain of the Varínka and amid mountainous terrain. The village therefore combines a clearly defined landscape with natural and cultural features spread throughout the municipality and its immediate surroundings.

Landscape

The area of Stráža belongs to the Malá Fatra Protected Landscape Area and lies within its third level of protection. The Varínka Protected Area plays a special geographical role: at the confluence of the mountain stream Branica and the Varínka, it forms a terrestrial corridor connecting the Krivánska Fatra with the Kysucká vrchovina. The Varínka itself flows through Stráža and is a trout fishery where fishing is permitted.

Nature

The Malá Fatra region has deciduous, coniferous, and mixed forests, supporting a wide variety of bird species. The nearby forests and beautiful countryside around Stráža are also suitable for hiking. Thus, both the river landscape and the wooded countryside are central to the immediate surroundings of the village, while the protected areas shape the broader regional context.

Cycle Paths

Several marked routes pass through Stráža or lead into the village. The green-marked, 23.6-kilometre Gbeľany–Lysica–Varín cycle route climbs briefly to Strážovský Hill, then descends to Stráža, passes through the village, and continues to Dolná Tižina. Another connection is the Žilina Dam–Terchová Cycle Highway. It is described as easy and safe and is considered suitable for families with children. The route follows the Varínka via Varín to Terchová, crosses a system of 17 wooden bridges, and offers the opportunity to eat ice cream in Stráža. In addition, the green-marked route 5472 Horný Vadičov–Lysica–Stráža–Krasňany leads to Stráža.

Culture and History

Every July, the municipality of Stráža organizes the Gorazdove dni sports and cultural celebrations. The Božie muky chapel stands on the hill above Stráža. It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and is a Neoclassical building dating from the end of the 18th century. The first written mention of Stráža dates from 1439 and appears in a deed of donation issued by King Albert. The local culture handed down through the generations also includes wearing a variant of the folk costume used in Terchová in Stráža.

Stráža can be reached by bus and car via a third-class road. The nearest railway station is Varín, located 7 kilometres from Stráža.
