Terchová: Gorges, Culture and Nature Trail

Terchová: Jánošíkove diery forms a system of gorges and canyons in the Krivánska Malá Fatra. They are located in the Rozsutec National Nature Reserve and can be accessed via marked hiking trails with footbridges, ladders and chains.

On Mount Oblaz, the nature trail ends at the “Terchovské srdce” observation tower; the trail focuses on the fauna and flora of Malá Fatra National Park. The observation tower is 30 metres high and quickly accessible for tourists. In summer, the Vrátna-Malá Fatra resort offers mountain tricycles, a bike park with a skill zone, tubing and a bungee trampoline; hikes begin from Paseky.

The outdoor activities differ in duration, height and type: the nature trail leads to a 30-metre-high tower, while the rope park offers an average 40-minute climbing experience at a height of three to seven metres. In summer, the Vrátna-Malá Fatra resort again offers several different activities side by side.

At the end of the Vrátna Valley, near the lower station of the Chleb cable car, the bus stop is named “Terchová – Vrátna výťah”.

Culture

The music of Terchová is performed by three-, four- or five-member string ensembles with a small two-string bass or a diatonic button accordion. Terchová’s musical tradition also includes polyphonic singing and folk dances.

In the centre of Terchová is the museum exhibition “Expozícia Jánošík a Terchová”. It covers the development of the municipality and its most famous son, Juraj Jánošík, and displays numerous wooden sculptures, painted ceramics, reverse-glass paintings, copper reliefs and drawings relating to the Jánošík tradition.

Jánošík Days is an international folklore festival in Terchová, founded in 1963. The Church of Terchová, dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius, is an architectural landmark of the valley. The statue of Juraj Jánošík is made of high-quality sheet steel, is larger than life and 7.5 metres high.

History

The Stations of the Cross on Mount Oravcové are made of glass and stone; the stone was quarried in Terchová more than a hundred years ago. On 3 July 2006, the Stations of the Cross were consecrated by Bishop Viliam Judák as part of the 17th Cyril-Methodius Days in Terchová.

The Cyril-Methodius Days in Terchová take place annually and give believers, pilgrims, folklorists and all those interested an opportunity to remember Slovakia’s spiritual and cultural roots.

Activities

The Terchová rope park is located in the centre of the village, near the football stadium and the Terchová amphitheatre. It includes numerous different rope obstacles and a system of several zip lines. The rope park also offers an average 40-minute climbing experience at a height of three to seven metres.

Jánošíkov dom is a symbolic house in Jánošík’s home village of Jánošov. The exhibition includes a traditional Jánošík room and explanations of the history of Jánošík and his family. During the visit, you can mint your own commemorative coin.
