Čičmany: Winter Sports and Painted Wooden Houses

Čičmany combines its winter sports facilities with houses, exhibitions and crafts that showcase the town from different perspectives. In Čičmany, skiers and snowboarders have access to six ski lifts, two marked cross-country ski trails and five runs of varying difficulty. During the ski season, a ski service, ski equipment rental, storage and a ski school are also available.

Culture

Radenov dom is the last surviving two-storey house in Čičmany. The exhibition there presents all stages of life, customs, work activities, occupations, livelihoods and the architecture of Čičmany, as well as clothing and textiles. This brings together different areas of everyday life and local design in one house. The exhibition thus combines information about living, working and creating with traditional textiles and clothing.

Another insight into domestic life can be found in the exhibition at House No. 42. In the form of a diorama, it shows the way of life in an extended family that was typical of Čičmany until the beginning of the 20th century. House No. 42 was built in 1913 as a residence for four families; they shared one stove and one table.

The ornamental painting of Čičmany’s wooden houses developed from the functional protection of the wood provided by limewashing. Čičmany embroidery was originally made from linen and uses geometrically stylized Renaissance motifs such as stars and squares, as well as animal motifs. The Čičmany heritage reservation comprises 136 houses. The houses and the embroidery therefore feature different forms of ornamental design; at the same time, limewashing as the starting point for the painting and linen as the material for the embroidery remain distinct from one another.

Landscape

At the summit of Strážov, the cadastral areas of Čičmany, Zliechov and Pružina meet. The Strážov National Nature Reserve is located in the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. These two references place Strážov in different geographical contexts. The three cadastral areas named form the summit-related boundaries, while the nature reserve is also part of the wider protected-area framework of the Strážovské vrchy.

A mountain bike trail leads from Čičmany via Javorinka to the Sedlo Javorinky saddle and across the other side of the mountain range to Čičermanské sedlo.
