Vrútky between the Lesser Fatra, cycling routes and railway history

Vrútky lies in the northern part of the Turiec Basin, on the left side of the Váh’s floodplain and terrace landscape, at the foot of the Lúčanská section of the Lesser Fatra. This location provides the geographical setting for routes into the mountains, cycling trails along the rivers and a city history closely connected with the railway.

Nature and trails

The Karvaša a Blahovca educational trail was created by the town of Vrútky in 2021. From the end of Karvaša-und-Blahovca Street, hiking trails lead into the Lúčanská Lesser Fatra towards Minčol and then continue to Martinské hole. The sequence of trail destinations shows a clear transition from the starting point in Vrútky to the named mountain destinations.

There are also two cycling connections with different routes. The red-marked Turčianska cyklomagistrála leads from Vrútky via Lipovec, Turčianske Kľačany, Sučany and municipalities at the foot of the Great Fatra to Turčianske Teplice. A yellow-marked cycling route runs from Vrútky along the banks of the Turiec on a newly built cycle path to Martin. Different markings, directions and destinations make it easier to compare the routes by landscape and course.

The cycling rest area in Vrútky has a shelter, parking spaces and bicycle stands. It also includes charging stations for electric vehicles and electric bicycles, a pump and tools for minor bicycle repairs. The rest area is therefore expressly designed both for taking a break and for carrying out simple bicycle maintenance.

Railway history and cityscape

Vrútky developed into an important railway junction in the second half of the 19th century. The permanent exhibition of the Railway Town of Vrútky presents the city’s historical development from prehistoric times to the 20th century. It can be visited by prior telephone appointment. The grounds of Výhrevňa Vrútky also contain historic railway vehicles and historic railway technology.

Several religious buildings complement the historic cityscape. The Roman Catholic Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1905 in the Neo-Gothic style and stands on the site of an Early Gothic church. The Dr Martin Luther Evangelical Church is a Neo-Gothic building dating from 1903. The Vrútky Synagogue was built in 1910 as a Neolog synagogue and now serves cultural purposes for the town of Vrútky.

The memorial room dedicated to Hana Zelinová commemorates the Slovak writer who was born in Vrútky. The memorial room contains her authentic furniture, her desk, a collection of her works published in various world languages and other valuable exhibits. Thus, alongside the city’s history and railway history, literature and personal memorabilia also take centre stage.

Leisure and the course of the year

The municipal outdoor swimming pool in Vrútky offers opportunities for relaxation as well as recreational and sports swimming. Since 2020, the week-long memorial and hiking programme Memoriál Stopami ukrývaných detí has begun in Vrútky every year in the first half of July.
