Príbovce – accommodation between culture, nature and cycling routes

Príbovce lies in the centre of the Turčianska kotlina basin, on the alluvial fan of the Blatnický potok stream, below its confluence with the Turiec River. The history of the settlement stretches from a Lusatian urn field to buildings and routes whose traces span several centuries. This historical setting is complemented by protected landscapes and two named cycling routes.

Geographical setting

Its location on the Blatnický potok stream and the Turiec River places Príbovce in the centre of the basin. The Turiec National Nature Reserve extends into the municipality. The SKUEV 0382 Turiec and Blatnický potok protected area also extends into the municipality. The protected landscapes also include the Mokrade Turca wetlands, protected under international conventions, which likewise extend into the municipality.

Culture and history

A Lusatian urn field in Príbovce bears witness to settlement at the end of the Bronze Age. Later, the settlement stood on an old historical road from Ponitrie. Notable religious buildings include the Roman Catholic Church of sv. Šimona a Júdu. It dates from the 14th century and was built in the Gothic style. It was remodelled in the Renaissance style in the 17th century; the church also houses a valuable Renaissance bell dating from 1591.

The Protestant church in Príbovce was built in 1829 in the Baroque-Classical style. It replaced an older wooden church built in 1783 during the Toleration period. Thus, Príbovce has two church buildings with different dates of origin and distinct stylistic influences.

Local history

Near the confluence of the Turiec and Blatnický potok streams stands a manor house with a round bastion tower, known by local residents as “kaštieľ”. The manor house was built on a Renaissance foundation and remodelled at the beginning and towards the end of the 19th century. Over the course of its history, it served as a primary school, kindergarten and municipal library, as well as a venue for other educational and social activities.

The Achimských water mill is also one of the settlement’s historical landmarks. It is the only one of the historic mills of Turiec that still stands in Príbovce today.

Cycling

Marked and maintained cycling route No. 5427 runs through Príbovce. The Turčianska bicyklová skupina JUS is responsible for its marking and maintenance; the route is 10 km long. Another route, the Tanková cesta route, includes Príbovce. It is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bicycles and offers views across the entire Turčianska kotlina basin.

Transport connections

A bus stop for both directions is located in the municipality of Príbovce, approximately in the centre of the settlement, near the municipal office. The settlement is well served by regional bus services from Martin and by long-distance bus connections.
