Kláštor Pod Znievom – Zniev Castle, Educational Trails and Local History
Zniev Castle is located in the northern part of the Žiar Mountains above Kláštor pod Znievom. A marked hiking trail leads to the ruins. The castle complex consists of an upper and a lower section.
Nature and Trails
The green-marked ascent from the cemetery in Kláštor pod Znievom leads via the Calvary complex to the ruins of Zniev Castle. The route takes approximately 1.5 hours and is also considered suitable for families with children. The starting point, approximate duration and ascent give the route a clearer profile than the themed educational trails.
The “Príbeh hradu Zniev” educational trail leads from the cemetery past a pond and through the forest below Zniev Castle.
The “Len taká nedeľná prechádzka” route follows a developed cycle path through forests and meadows. At the same time, the educational trail of the same name provides information about the local tradition of oil production and saffron trading. The route and its content can therefore be considered separately: the route describes a path through the landscape, while the educational trail adds a local economic theme.
The trails in and around Kláštor pod Znievom therefore have different defining features: the ascent to the castle specifies an approximate time requirement and a marked route, “Príbeh hradu Zniev” passes by a pond and through the forest, and “Len taká nedeľná prechádzka” combines forests and meadows with a cycle path and local history.
Culture and History
A Baroque chapel stands on the Calvary complex. It dates from 1728 and contains paintings by J. B. Klemens.
The monastery and church in Kláštor pod Znievom date from the mid-13th century. The monastery initially belonged to the Premonstratensians and later to the Jesuits. Thus, architectural history and the changing affiliation of a religious institution coexist in one place.
The Pamätná izba is located in the second building of the Zniev Gymnasium, which was built in 1874. Visits to the Pamätná izba must be announced in advance at the municipal office of Kláštor pod Znievom. The memorial room is therefore connected both with a specific building and with prior notification.
The “Príbeh mestečka pod Znievom” educational trail leads through Kláštor pod Znievom and presents the history of the town, as well as information about related notable figures, at significant buildings. It therefore focuses on several stops in the town, while the Pamätná izba and the castle each represent individual historical sites.
In addition, the municipality of Kláštor pod Znievom offers a digital tour, “Keď osobnosti spod Znieva prehovoria”, covering local historical sites and notable figures. The cultural themes thus range from the castle complex, chapel, monastery and church to buildings, notable figures and a digital tour.
