Lieskovec: Hrádok, Bell Tower and Springs

History and Townscape

Archaeological finds at Hrádok, including pottery from the Baden culture, show that settlement in the cadastral territory of Lieskovec is considerably older than the documented written record. The first documented written mention of the cadastral territory dates from 1263 and appears in a charter issued by King Béla IV. For chronological classification, archaeological traces and a precisely dated written record can therefore be considered alongside each other.

Lieskovec’s present-day landmark is the bell tower dating from 1866. As a structure, the Lieskovec bell tower is a late-classical, masonry building with a square floor plan. Its date, style and floor plan provide different points of reference if you want to understand the townscape not only through its location, but also through its architectural features.

Landscape and Regional Context

The cadastral territory of Lieskovec covers 1,389 hectares and extends across the Zvolen Basin. The Poľana volcanic mountain range shapes the panorama of this basin. Lieskovec belongs to the Banskobystrický samosprávny kraj and the Zvolen District, and is also part of the Podpoľanie ethnographic region.

These designations place Lieskovec in context on several levels: the Zvolen Basin describes the landscape area, Poľana the defining mountain range, while the administrative and ethnographic regions establish different regional connections. For planning purposes, you can consider these levels separately, depending on whether you are interested in the landscape, administration or cultural region.

Forests and Mineral Springs

The area around Lieskovec features numerous valleys and dense forests rich in fauna and flora. The Lieskovec area is also home to three mineral springs. The number of springs and the description of the forests relate to different aspects of the natural environment.

Medokýš is located in the acacia grove in the Medokýšne Valley. The spring is cold, hypotonic and naturally carbonated; it also has an elevated silicic acid content. The local population uses Medokýš for drinking. The precise name of the spring site, its geological properties and its traditional use can each be considered as separate information when assessing it.

Hiking Trail and Cultural Programme

The Sliač–Lieskovec–Slatinka tourist hiking trail is one of the options in the vicinity of Lieskovec. Its route name identifies three connected places and clearly indicates its hiking character, without equating it with the town’s archaeological or architectural attractions.

The Lieskovec Cultural Summer programme was to include annual open-air film screenings in the new amphitheatre.
