Zvolenská Slatina: Valley, History and Culture

Zvolenská Slatina is located in the Zvolen Basin, in the valley of the Slatinský potok, a right-bank tributary of the Slatina. At the same time, the municipality extends through the valley of the Slatina River on the plain of the Slatina Basin. The Poľany and Javoria mountain ranges surround Zvolenská Slatina and form the geographical setting of the municipality.

History

The oldest evidence of settlement in Zvolenská Slatina dates from the Late Bronze Age. Zvolenská Slatina was first mentioned in writing as a settlement in 1332.

Culture

The specifically identified buildings include the Baroque Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, built in 1837. Zvolenská Slatina is also home to a reconstructed barn designated as a cultural monument. A residential house with an outbuilding dating from 1880 is likewise designated as a cultural monument and documents the development of regional folk architecture. This series is complemented by the Terézia Vansová Memorial Room, which is also located in Zvolenská Slatina. The historical landmarks thus include a religious building, rural architectural forms and a specifically named memorial site.

Nature

The section of the Slatina Valley between Zvolenská Slatina and the Môťová Reservoir is considered one of the last preserved central Slovak mid-mountain valleys with a meandering river in Central Europe.

Trails

The blue-marked hiking route 2650/c passes through Zvolenská Slatina. It runs for 15 kilometres from Očová via Zvolenská Slatina to Kalinka. Another named route is the Náučný chodník údolím Slatiny educational trail, which begins at the Môťová Reservoir. It opened in 2002, is 6.5 kilometres long and includes eight stations.

Culture and Cuisine

Zvolenská Slatina is home to the oldest and largest bryndza cheese dairy in the world. It was founded in 1797 by the Molec family. The Slatinský jarmok fair is also associated with the municipality: it was held in Zvolenská Slatina from 2011 to 2026. Thus, in addition to the historic buildings, the municipality is associated with a specifically named bryndza dairy and a fair held during a specified period.
