Podzámčok – Accommodation, Folklore and the Ruins of Dobronivá Castle

History

The ruins of Dobronivá Castle were probably built after the Tatar invasion in the second half of the 13th century as a guard post on an old trade route south of Zvolen. From the end of a road, a short, unmarked 500-metre path leads to the ruins of Dobronivá Castle. The castle grounds feature a recreational park with benches, a fire pit and an information board.

Culture

The “Na sv. Jána” folklore festival in Podzámčok is of regional importance and preserves folk traditions and customs. Every year, the Podzámočan folklore group prepares programmes in which it presents dances, songs, customs and traditions from Podzámčok. It preserves traditional songs from Podzámčok and presents local traditions and costumes in themed programmes. At a nationwide showcase of village folklore in Likavka, the group presented the programme “Podzámocká svadba”.

At the “Na svätého Jána” folklore festival, performances by children from Podzámčok and the Podzámočan folklore group, as well as a bonfire, were announced for 20 June 2026. The folklore festival was announced as its 29th edition.

The Church of Saint John the Baptist stands on a hill in the centre of Podzámčok. It was consecrated on 16 November 2002. The wooden bell tower of Podzámčok was built in 1868 and stands on a hill near the Church of Saint John the Baptist. It houses a rare late Baroque bell from 1782, made by the Banská Bystrica bell founder Ján Juraj Knobloch.

Nature

The western part of the municipality of Podzámčok extends into the Neresnica Valley. Beech forests grow on the western ridges of the Javorie Mountains.
