Sása: Accommodation, Gavurky and Historic Churches

Sása combines protected nature with churches, a memorial house and traces of a long local history. The different facets of the village thus range from a designated natural area to sacred buildings and historical references spanning several centuries.

Nature

The protected Gavurky area extends across the cadastral territories of the municipalities of Sása and Dobrá Niva. It covers 57.4 hectares and lies at an altitude of 444 to 470 metres above sea level. The area is suitable for a short walk or easy nature observation. The nearest access point from Sása is approximately 2 km away.

Culture

The Church of Saint Catherine in Sása was built at the end of the first half of the 13th century as a single-nave, late Romanesque church. It is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria and stands on Kašteľ Hill in Sása. A fortification was built around the Catholic church, consisting of several walls and ditches that are two metres high and wide.

The Evangelical Church in Sása is a Neoclassical building constructed between 1894 and 1899. It has a hall-like interior with a straight altar end and a wooden beam ceiling. The church is in very good condition and continues to serve its purpose.

History

The first written record of Sása dates from 1332 and 1337, when the village was mentioned in papal tithe registers. In 1351, Sása received town privileges corresponding to those of Babiná and Dobrá Niva.

The memorial house in Sása is the former Roman Catholic parish house. It was built in the mid-18th century in the Baroque style; Andrej Truchlý-Sitniansky worked there.

The bus stops in Sása include Kameňolom, Pod lipkami, MŠ, Stred and Podskalka. A hiking route leads through Babiná, Sása and Zaježová.
