Culture and History
Pustý hrad is a castle ruin above the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers. The fortified area of Pustý hrad covered 7.6 hectares, making the site one of the largest castles in Europe. The original Romanesque Church of Saint Elizabeth in Zvolen dates from 1244–1250 and is a national cultural monument.
In Štefan Višňovský Park below Zvolen Castle, there is a model of the Hurban armoured train. The different cultural stops can be arranged according to your interests and available time, without prescribing a single visiting pattern. The Pustý hrad area, including the current archaeological research site, is open to the public; the Pustý hrad educational trail leads there. The trail runs for 5.2 km through oak-hornbeam forests and features eight multimedia information panels about the local fauna and flora.
Pustý hrad offers views of the Zvolen Basin and the surrounding mountains. The arboretum contains Slovakia’s largest rose collection, with 660 varieties. It also has an extensive collection of more than 500 species of cacti and succulents from South America.
The trail length, fixed information panels and various plant collections provide different reference points for planning the timing and themes of a visit. You can distinguish between a route through the forest, a viewpoint and botanical highlights without having to combine the offerings into a single experience.
Water and Leisure
Tancujúce plte na Hrone is a leisure and educational attraction offering rafting on the Hron. The main route takes two hours and runs from Zvolen to the water sports camp in the municipality of Budča. Specially prepared rafts for tourist trips, with 12 places, are used for this purpose.
