Dubové – Barborská cesta, Church and Local History

The Barborská cesta hiking route leads to Dubové via Sedlo Volárska. At the entrance to the village, it reaches the buildings of the agricultural cooperative and then runs along the edge of a lightly trafficked paved road towards Bacúrov. In this way, the trail connects the crossing over the saddle with the village area and its continuation. Within Dubové, this section passes by the buildings of the agricultural cooperative before the route once again leads out of the village along the roadside.

Visit and Building

The Evangelical Church in Dubové can be opened by prior telephone appointment at +421 910 924 520. The Neoclassical building was constructed in 1866–1867. Inside are an altar, a baptismal font and a pulpit dating from 1866, as well as bells from 1868 and 1921. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. It stands on a hill northeast of the village centre. Its construction period, furnishings, state of preservation and current use are therefore among the building’s defining features; its location on the hill also places it within the context of Dubové.

History

Dubové was first mentioned in 1255 as terra Duboudyl. In the same year, the village passed through a donation by Béla IV from the possession of Zvolen Castle into the hands of Bertold (Pertold), a castle stonemason. The first mention of the village name and the subsequent change of ownership thus date from the same year. Together, they link the documentary mention of Dubové with its transfer from the possession of Zvolen Castle to a specifically named castle stonemason.

Everyday Life and Tradition

Traditional home cooking in Dubové included Mrvenica, Halušky, potato soup and cabbage with meat. The historical household and craft tradition also included making or repairing rakes, hay forks, brooms and tool handles. Birchwood brooms were sold in Zvolen and Banská Štiavnica; one cost between 80 hellers and 1 Kč. The items mentioned thus ranged from equipment for field and hay work to brooms and handles. Alongside the materials and activities involved, the two places of sale and the historical price range of the birch brooms have also been preserved.

The traditional cultural heritage includes the folk songs collected under the title „Ľudové piesne z Dubového“. Beekeeping was also practised to a limited extent in Dubové, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. Cuisine, crafts, songs and beekeeping represent different areas of local tradition: they range from food and everyday objects to musical content and an agricultural activity that was especially prominent during a particular period.
