Kunešov – accommodation between culture and mountain trails

Kunešov is located in the western part of the Kremnické vrchy mountains, on the Kunešovská planina plateau. The village is also situated in the source area of the Kopernica stream. Between mountain landscapes, trails, and a multifaceted local history, Kunešov combines natural areas with notable cultural monuments.

Landscape

The location on the Kunešovská planina plateau defines the village’s geographical setting. Kunešov belongs to the western part of the Kremnické vrchy mountains and lies where the Kopernica stream rises. The trails in the surrounding area also reflect this landscape: the ascent to Bralová rock can begin in Kunešov. The village also offers opportunities for active recreation in nature and hiking.

Culture and history

Kunešov is an originally German settlement. It was first mentioned in writing under the name villa Sankt Michaelis. The local history also includes the state lace-making school founded in 1912. A central landmark is the Church of St Michael the Archangel, originally a single-nave Gothic building dating from around 1400. In 1766, the church was remodelled in the Baroque style. In the Central Register of the Monument Fund of Slovakia, it is listed as a national cultural monument under number 1244/0.

The historic surroundings of the church include other notable points. On the southern edge of Kunešov stands a Late Classicist wayside chapel from the second half of the 19th century. A memorial plaque in the church names 63 residents of Kunešov who were shot at Magurka during the Second World War. A small square chapel stands in front of Kunešov at the entrance to Kremnické Bane.

Trails and nature

The Cesta hrdinov SNP long-distance trail passes through Kunešov on the road to Kremnické Bane. The 17 km Kremnica section of this long-distance trail runs from Sedlo pod Vysokou on the western side above Kunešov into the Kremnica section. The village is thus part of a named trail route connecting various points in the mountains.

Kunešov is also part of several cycling routes. A 38.5 km cycling loop runs from Kremnica via Kremnické Bane, Kunešov, Slaská, Kopernica, and Lúčky back to Kremnica; 618 metres of elevation gain must be covered. Another cycling loop runs from Kremnica via Kopernica and Kunešov back to Kremnica. The two routes therefore differ both in their course and in the explicitly stated distance and specified elevation gain.
