Kopernica Between Forests, Trails and History

Kopernica lies in the western group of the Kremnické vrchy mountains, in a narrow, long valley of the Kopernický potok stream, and is part of the Kremnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area. When planning a visit, nature, trails and local history can be considered as separate focal points.

Geographical Setting

Its valley location places Kopernica in the western part of the Kremnické vrchy mountains. The Kopernický potok stream runs through the narrow, long valley, while the Protected Landscape Area provides the broader geographical framework. This places the specific location of the village and its inclusion in the protected mountain area side by side, without deriving any different geographical boundary from them.

For a comparison with other destinations, you can also include Krahule, Horná Ves, Kunešov, Ihráč, Vyhne, Kremnické Bane, Bartošova Lehôtka and Lúčky as well.

Nature and Trails

As a result of intensive mining activity, the forests above Kopernica are still crisscrossed by a dense network of roads and paths. South of the village lies Horná Klapa, a rocky outcrop that serves as a natural viewpoint. It is not unusual to encounter red deer and roe deer in the surrounding forests. Strawberries, raspberries and blackberries also grow around Kopernica, among other fruits.

When planning your own visit, these landscape features can be considered as different nature themes: roads and paths, a named viewpoint, wildlife and forest fruits each provide a different focus. The natural viewpoint of Horná Klapa and the network of paths above the village do not form part of the same geographical description and are classified separately.

Marked Hiking Trails

Two local or marked hiking trails run through the area. The Kopernica–Lutila–Dolná Klapa–Jazierko Slobodné route is a locally marked hiking trail. Another marked connection runs from Kopernica via Slaská to Jazierko Slobodné.

The two routes differ in their named points along the way and can therefore be compared separately. When choosing hiking routes, visitors can first pay attention to the respective sequence of villages and landscape features instead of combining both trails into a single route description.

Cycling

For bicycles, the 49-kilometre Pohronsko–kremnický cycling circuit is classified as SPORT. It is suitable for road bikes, trekking bikes and mountain bikes. The circuit runs from Lúčky through Kopernica to Lutila and also includes another ascent above Kopernica. From there, it offers a view of the surrounding landscape.

For cycling, this provides the exact length, the specified bicycle types, the route through several villages and the additional ascent with its landscape view. These details allow the cycling route to be objectively compared with the two marked hiking trails.

Culture and Village Character

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Martin the Bishop is the oldest historic building in Kopernica. At the same time, it is a Gothic structure dating from the 13th century. The main altar of Saint Martin dates from 1743 and is designed in the Baroque style.

The village character also includes several typical German-style houses with passageways that have been preserved in Kopernica to this day. The church, altar and houses with passageways thus represent different historical layers of the village: a Gothic structure, Baroque furnishings and a preserved traditional house form.

Getting to Kopernica

Bus route 222 connects Kremnica with Kopernica and serves several stops in Kopernica. For travel planning, this means taking into account both the connection between Kremnica and the village and the fact that several stops are served within Kopernica.
