Giovo: Wine Landscapes, Trails and Culture

Giovo Between Wine Landscapes and Festival Traditions

The Festa dell'Uva in Verla di Giovo is deeply rooted in the cultural tradition of the municipality of Giovo and the entire Val di Cembra. The Festa dell'Uva includes music, performances, art, as well as a food and wine programme. The cultural landscape of Giovo and the entire Val di Cembra is part of the Strada del Vino e dei sapori del Trentino. The term cultural landscape refers to a landscape in which natural forms and human-shaped uses are visible together.

Terraced Wine-Growing Landscape

The wine-growing landscape of Giovo in the Val di Cembra is characterised by terraced pergole retiche on alluvial sand, which descend towards the valley floor of the Avisio. Alluvial sand is sediment deposited by water and here refers to the subsoil on which the pergole retiche stand. Giovo produces wines such as Müller Thurgau, Pinot Nero and Chardonnay. These grape varieties therefore represent the actual wine production associated with Giovo's terraced landscape.

Dos Paion and Monte Corona

The walking trail to the Dos Paion viewpoint on Monte Corona begins in Ville and leads to a viewpoint on Monte Corona. A viewpoint is a place that directs the view towards the surrounding landscape. From the Dos Paion viewpoint, there are views of the peaks of eastern Trentino and the vineyards of Giovo. The trail and its destination are therefore clearly defined geographically through the starting point of Ville, Monte Corona and the view of eastern Trentino.

Nature at Lac de Montesel and on the Mancabrot Trail

Lac de Montesel is home to rare plants and serves as a breeding ground for amphibians. The Mancabrot Trail passes through forests, upland areas, gently rolling farmland and a small wetland. A wetland is a permanently or temporarily wet habitat. In addition to the small wetland at Lac de Montesel, a wildlife observation point has been established. Lac de Montesel and the Mancabrot Trail therefore each represent different landscape elements within Giovo's nature-related attractions.

Historical Traces in Mosana di Giovo

The Chiesa di San Giorgio in Mosana di Giovo was mentioned as early as 1369 as a hermitage. In the 15th century, the Chiesa di San Giorgio in Mosana di Giovo was rebuilt. A hermitage refers to a religious place dedicated to secluded living. In its documented history, the church therefore connects the mention in 1369 with a rebuilding in the 15th century, without this implying anything about its present-day use.

The Campionissimi Cycling Profile

The Campionissimi climb has an average gradient of more than 8 percent; individual sections exceed 12 percent. A gradient expressed as a percentage describes the ratio of the difference in elevation to the horizontal distance. The two values characterise both the average gradient and the steeper sections of the Campionissimi.
