History and historical sites

The Museo della Scuola reconstructs more than 70 years of local school life using historic school desks, ink wells, registers and certificates. A museum reconstructs the past by considering preserved objects and written records together. The parish church of San Giorgio houses an Early Christian bas-relief depicting an olive tree and birds. Early Christian refers to the early Christian era, while a bas-relief projects only slightly from a surface. Amabile Visintainer, known as Santa Paolina, was born in Vigolo Vattaro in 1865.

Landscape and historic buildings

Routes on the Vigolana

The “I 60 Km della Vigolana” route includes Terre Rosse above Vigolo Vattaro, with views across the entire Altopiano della Vigolana. The Italian term Altopiano can be translated as high plateau. In its description, the route connects a specific section above Vigolo Vattaro with views across the entire high plateau.

The Vigolana offers around 60 kilometres of walking and hiking trails, including paths between alpine huts as well as themed routes for Nordic walking, mountain biking and horse riding. Nordic walking is a form of fitness walking with poles, while mountain biking means cycling off-road. Horse riding is also included among the themed routes. The figure of around 60 kilometres remains an approximate estimate.

The “2367 Al castello di Vigolo Vattaro” tour passes through the historic centre of Vigolo Vattaro to Castel Vigolo, an old medieval fortress on a scenic, green hill. A historic centre refers to the older part of a settlement. A fortress is a fortified place that served for protection. The tour name explicitly identifies the route through the historic centre and the destination, Castel Vigolo.

Typical products and Festa della Patata

Typical products from the Vigolo Vattaro area include honey, wine, chestnuts and cheese, among others. At the Festa della Patata, local specialities such as the traditional tortel di patate and polenta can be sampled. Polenta is a traditional dish made from cornmeal; tortel di patate is also one of the local specialities.
