Montecampione between winter and summer activities

The Montecampione tourist area lies between the municipalities of Artogne and Pian Camuno. It stretches from the village of Montecampione 1200 to the “Le Baite” residential complex near Plan di Montecampione at an altitude of 1,800 m. These two high points give the area a distinct vertical structure.

In winter, Montecampione offers skiing and snowboarding. In summer, hiking trails and opportunities for mountain biking take center stage. For a stay involving changing interests, these activities can be viewed as two separate seasonal perspectives: winter sports on the one hand, hiking and mountain biking on the other.

Churches and frescoes in Artogne

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Elisabetta reflects several periods of history. Its characteristic architectural elements are attributed to the late 15th century. The entrance portals bear the dates 1532 and 1538. In the presbytery and on the side walls, the church preserves frescoes that re-emerged following the restorations of 1907 and 1969. Many of these depictions show Marian events.

The Chiesetta di Sant'Andrea has a fresco in a lunette on the vault of the presbytery, dated July 4, 1515. At the same time, it is generally regarded as the oldest of Artogne’s churches; its origins are usually dated to the 14th century.

The Chiesa di San Rocco is officially attributed to the 16th century, although it has older origins. Each bay of the nave’s vault contains a medallion with frescoes. The depictions show episodes from the life of Saint Roch and are dated to the mid-19th century.

Piazze and the Camminata Tre Campanili

Piazze is home to the Parrocchiale di S. Maria della Neve. The present building dates from the 17th to 18th centuries and is a reconstruction of an earlier church documented since the 15th century. Inside, white-and-gold stucco, along with fresco medallions on the vaults and in the altar frames, defines the space.

Another way to experience Artogne throughout the year is the Camminata Tre Campanili. This traditional race takes place in Artogne on Easter Monday. The route follows roads and mule tracks through the municipalities of Artogne, Pian Camuno and Gianico.

Local character with historical roots

In 1610, dried chestnuts and biscuits were among the products that, according to the cadastral description of the time, provided Artogne with a significant income.
