Falkenau combines an industrial past, trails through the landscape and vibrant local traditions. History and the present meet at individual buildings, in the mining area, on hiking trails and at recurring festivals.
Industrial history: The Schreyersche SpinnmĂĽhle, also known as the Georg Liebermann cotton mill, is located at Untere Spinnerei, DorfstraĂźe 15, and is significant in terms of architectural history, local history, industrial history and personal history. The spinning mill at Untere Spinnerei and the mining area along the Zechenbach therefore represent two historical areas in Falkenau.
Mining: Early modern silver mining developed along the Zechenbach in Falkenau’s local mining area. A total of 29 shafts can be documented there.
Advent: The traditional Falkenau Advent Festival takes place every year behind the community centre on the first Sunday of Advent.
Experience Mining History on the Trails
In Falkenau, mining history is linked not only to individual historic sites but also to recurring hiking activities. Every year, mining hikes take place along the Mining Hiking Trail and the Mining Educational Trail in Zechengrund. Both activities share Zechengrund as their setting and combine the route with the subject of mining.
Another point of interest is located on the Zechengrund educational trail: it leads to the entrance of the Xaverius Tunnel. The entrance is the specific destination of this section of the educational trail.
The site of today’s outdoor swimming pool also has a historical backstory. An ore-processing and washing plant was once planned for this area; the Thirty Years’ War put an end to the plan. The earlier plans and its present-day use as an outdoor swimming pool belong to different periods.
Between Flöha, Aue and Hetzdorf Viaduct
The circular hike “From Flöha to Hetzdorf Viaduct” follows the Flöha and passes through Falkenau to Hetzdorf Viaduct. The route therefore includes both the connection to the river and the section through Falkenau. When planning a circular route, the Flöha, Falkenau and Hetzdorf Viaduct can be used as fixed waypoints.
The route follows a footpath and cycle path to Falkenau. It then crosses the Flöha floodplain, which is still relatively wide here. The change from the path to Falkenau to the wide floodplain describes two different sections of the same route.
Festivals with Set Dates
The long-standing Walpurgis Night tradition is part of the local annual calendar. It continues on 30 April with dancing into May at the festival grounds behind the community centre. On the May holiday, a maypole is also erected in front of the community centre in Falkenau. Both events take place near the community centre, but differ in date and occasion.
At the Falkenau Advent Festival, the more than 30-year-old Falkenau Christmas pyramid is set in motion. Thus, in addition to the date, a specific local custom is also part of the Advent Festival.
Nature Activities in Falkenau
The Falkenau Nature Education Park includes a barefoot trail with a field of prickly cones. When the Falkenau Nature Education Park opened, visitors could explore a park with 12 stations. At the Nature Education Park, walking without shoes is therefore the main attraction.
Falkenau outdoor swimming pool is a well-maintained old natural swimming pool in a scenic location and is used for swimming and relaxation.
