Connections and Routes
Erdmannsdorf and Hennersdorf each have a railway connection on the Zschopau Valley Railway. The Zschopau Valley Trail approaches Augustusburg via a serpentine climb past Augustusburg Castle. From Augustusburg, the route towards Erdmannsdorf continues either by funicular or on foot along the railway line.
A circular route leads through the historic old town of Augustusburg, to the Kurfürstin-Anna Garden, past Augustusburg Castle and the town church, and onwards to Lotterhof and the funicular.
Culture and History
Augustusburg Castle was built between 1568 and 1572/73 as a hunting and pleasure palace. The castle museum features exhibitions on hunting fauna, ornithology, the history of hunting and the history of the castle. The castle courtyard, ticket area, motorcycle museum, hunting and ornithology museum, carriage museum and special exhibition are accessible to visitors with disabilities.
St. Petri Town Church, together with the castle, shapes the silhouette of Augustusburg. Its origins date back to a consecration in 1444; it is also still used as a venue for musical events. The castle church houses a religious painting by Lucas Cranach the Younger, which is considered to have exceptional historical value for Saxony and beyond.
The Venus Hall contains 16th-century murals considered unique in the German-speaking region. Around Markt and Pfarrgasse, plaques on the buildings explain the history of selected buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries.
