Around Nerdlen, the maars are considered volcanic craters filled with water; they offer natural swimming areas and boat tours. Daun is also home to a volcano museum.

Trails

Nerdlen is located near the start of the Lieser Path. The shorter Struth Circular Trail runs for around 16 kilometres through forests and fields, mostly follows well-maintained paths, and offers panoramic views. The route passes through Neichen, Beinhausen, Afelskreuz, Sarmersbach, Nerdlen, and Kradenbach, can be explored by mountain bike or trekking bike, and includes a rest area with a distant view of Hilgerath Parish Church.

The HeimatSpur Kleelandrunde begins and ends at the community centre at Bergstraße 1 in Sarmersbach. It leads through woodland near the Hörscheid chapel, returns to Nerdlen, and continues across the Eulen Bridge outside the municipality.

History

The settlement history of Nerdlen can be traced back to around 1400 in the Middle Ages. At that time, farmers settled at the confluence of the Sarmersbach and Lieser rivers. The place name Nerdlen developed from “Zu den Erlen” via “Nerlen”.

Culture

St Anthony’s Chapel stands in the centre of Nerdlen and continues to be used for Masses, services of the Word, and rosaries. After a village fire in 1893, it was rebuilt and consecrated in 1898.
