Tettscheid: Hiking, Ponds and Regional History

Tettscheid is a stop on the HeimatSpur 3 Villages Trail. In the village or along the trail are Tettscheid Pond, the Jodokus Chapel and the farmhouse dating from 1801; the annual fair on the first Sunday in May is an additional event in its own right.

The circular hike within a day

The circular hike is moderately difficult, 14.8 kilometres long, takes around 4.5 hours and includes 307 metres of ascent and descent respectively. This approximate duration provides the framework for a full day of hiking. When planning with a break, it remains the pure walking time; additional time for an interruption or a longer stay must be added.

Anyone wishing to complete the entire circuit should plan for the return journey as well as for the section leading to Tettscheid. The circuit comprises several trail sections and requires the stated timeframe for the hiking day. Breaks and further details about the villages should fall outside the pure walking time.

Pond, Lieser and the return journey

On the HeimatSpur 3 Villages Trail, the route follows the Lieser to Tettscheid. At kilometre 2.9, Tettscheid Pond is a highlight of the route. The trail recommends taking a picnic break there. This break can be planned at a clearly designated spot along the hike.

The rest of the route follows natural trails past a tranquil reservoir and back to Üdersdorf. The section at the reservoir is part of the return journey and not a separate detour. The recommended break at the pond can therefore be incorporated into the route without omitting the later trail via the reservoir and the return to Üdersdorf.

The date of the annual fair

The fair in Tettscheid is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in May and is the festival of Saint Quirinus. For annual planning, the relevant time marker is therefore not a fixed date but the first Sunday in May; the specific calendar date is only determined for the respective year. If you align your stay with this local event, the festival date remains a separate planning point alongside the hike. Both topics can be accommodated within the same stay without tying the fair to a specific date.

Jodokus Chapel and farmhouse

The first chapel in honour of Saint Jodokus was probably built in Tettscheid in 1743. The later Jodokus Chapel followed, with construction completed in 1904 and its consecration taking place on 9 February 1905. The chapel is thus associated with Saint Jodokus and several historical dates.

Another architectural detail is the farmhouse dating from 1801 in Tettscheid. It still has a „black kitchen“ with an open hearth. For those interested in culture, the Jodokus Chapel and the black kitchen are two specific aspects of Tettscheid's local history. The farmhouse complements the chapel with a preserved detail of domestic architecture.
