Betteldorf: Hotels and Accommodation

Landscape

The HeimatSpur Döhmbergweg trail leads through meadows and forests to the foot of the Döhmberg. From a hilltop, the route offers views of Dockweiler and Dreis; it also includes a rest area with a view.

Hiking

The HeimatSpur Döhmbergweg is an easy 5.3-kilometre circular hiking trail with a duration of 1.5 hours and 49 metres of ascent and descent. The start and finish are at the Bürgerhaus on Zilsdorfer Straße in Betteldorf. The signposted route combines an initial asphalt section with natural paths, short stretches across meadows and a beech forest.

At kilometre 3.8, the trail can be connected with the HeimatSpur Quellenweg, providing access to the Dreiser Weiher.

Villagescape

Betteldorf has a linear village structure that becomes denser in the village centre, forming a clustered settlement. The oldest settlement area, “Auf dem Höff-chen”, is characterised by dense development and larger farm complexes that were formerly associated with agriculture.

History and Culture

The Catholic Chapel of St Apollonia is considered to be a plastered rubble-stone building dating from the 18th century and was extended around 1895. Its features include a small bell tower with a slate roof and small wooden figures of Saints Aegidius and Luke from the 18th century. The Bergkapelle stands on the Mühlenberg at a boundary marker for Dockweiler, Dreis and Betteldorf.

Early Roman settlement is documented by significant coin hoards. The village name is associated with a Roman roadside inn on the former Maas–Moselle Roman road around 475 AD. Around the year 1000, a settlement connected with Betilo was called “Villa Bettilonis”. A green saltire refers to Roman roads that ran south-west of the Döhmberg.
