Nature

The Vulkaneifel is designated as both a nature park and a UNESCO Global Geopark. Its landscape includes maar volcanoes, volcanic cones, lava flows, and mineral springs.

Mürmes is protected as a nature reserve and has a peat layer approximately four meters thick. Bogbean, heath spotted orchid, and round-leaved sundew occur there. Mürmes is also an important breeding area for reed warblers, garganeys, and corncrakes.

Holzmaar has been protected since 1975. A circular trail through beech forest allows visitors to explore Holzmaar. At Pulvermaar, visitors can rent a rowboat.

Hiking

The Antonius Trail connects in the direction of Gillenfeld, Winkel, Udler, Brockscheid, Demerath, and Steineberg. Its network of paths supports extended day hikes, multi-day hikes, and shorter circular walks.

The Antonius Trail is considered suitable for relaxed day hikes focusing on experiencing nature and the region. The HeimatSpur Antonius Trail starts and ends in Ellscheid, passes through Saxler on the return route, and reaches the Mürmes wetlands west of Ellscheid.

A 9 km circular route is described as a trail where hikers can explore nature.

Culture

The St. Wendelinus Chapel in Saxler dates from 1716 and has hand-carved wooden benches. Saxler also has two devotional shrines in the form of plastered wall blocks with sandstone reliefs, probably dating from the 18th century.

A historic iron bridge dating from 1908 now crosses the Maare-Moselle Cycle Route.
