Oberkirn: Hotels and Accommodations

Culture and History
At the upper edge of the village stands the Protestant church on the foundations of a Roman country estate, a villa rustica. The present-day Protestant church was built a few years before 1400 in a simple Gothic style and served as a burial place for the Schenks of Schmidtburg. A figurative tombstone for Franz Brune von Schmidtburg, who died in 1573, can be seen on its exterior wall.
The Catholic church was consecrated in 1794. It stands in the middle of the village on a massive slate slope.
Mining
Until the mid-20th century, slate mining in 21 surrounding mines was Oberkirn’s main source of income. Numerous spoil heaps and several dozen tunnel entrances have been preserved on the slope of the Kyrbach valley as traces of this mining past. Beyond the Kyrbach bridge, a figure of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners, stands in a rock niche.
Hiking
On the hill above Oberkirn, next to the road to Schwerbach, stands a large wayside cross. The Rhaunen–Oberkirn–Hausen hiking route is a moderately difficult half-day tour covering 12.8 kilometers and taking 3.5 hours. It leads along meadow paths and through sections of woodland and offers views of the Idarkopf.
