Allenbach: Hotels and Accommodation
Allenbach borders directly on the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. The national park covers 10,000 hectares of the Hunsrück uplands and is designated as a hotspot of biodiversity. Its defining features include distinctive forests and a diverse range of flora and fauna. The park can be accessed from the town for exploration; the surrounding area also includes the Idarbachtal nature trail and the wooded landscapes of the Hunsrück.
Nature
The Allenbacher Weiher is a biotope with approximately one hectare of water surface and three hectares of natural area dedicated to nature conservation. Boating, fishing and swimming are not permitted there. The approximately one-kilometre circular trail around the Allenbacher Weiher is designed for prams and wheelchairs and offers numerous seating and observation areas. A Kneipp footbath is located directly beside the circular trail; sanitary facilities are available on site.
The nature education trail at the Allenbacher Weiher explains the diversity of the unique local flora and fauna. Six Dream Loops run directly through the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.
Hiking and Cycling
The “Zwischen den Wäldern” Dream Loop starts at the Allenbacher Weiher, passes the historic grain mill in Allenbach and includes a section of the Idarbach nature trail. The route also passes the Krahloch Geopark, which presents geology, rocks, mining and the natural environment through stone exhibits and information panels.
Premium trails in the Hunsrück region mostly run along narrow, natural paths beside streams and rock formations, leading to viewpoints as well as natural or cultural monuments. Stage 1 of the National Park Cycle Route is a challenging 55.5-kilometre bike tour with 949.1 metres of elevation gain. It ends in Allenbach and is designed for sporty e-bike riders.
History and Culture
The first documented mention of Allenbach dates back to 22 January 1265 and appears in an agreement between the Sponheim brothers Gottfried and Heinrich. From the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century, Allenbach was an industrial centre. Two copper works in Allenbach are documented: the old smelter from 1400 and the new smelter from 1450. Remains of the former Allenbach smelting works are still visible; the course of the water channel belonging to the former smelter can also still be seen in the meadows below Allenbach.
The simple Neoclassical church in Allenbach was completed in 1781. It contains a Stumm organ in the Empire style dating from 1832, with one manual and twelve stops. Allenbach Castle is a listed monument and can be visited as part of Open Monument Day.
Practical Information
Bus routes 800, 845 and 890 take you to the Allenbach stop for the journey to Allenbach Castle; from there, continue on foot. The Saar-Hunsrück Premium Hiking Region promotes travel by public transport as well as getting around the region by bus and train.
