Culture and History

Altburg is an open-air museum with reconstructed houses on the site of a Celtic hillfort that was used from the 3rd to the 1st century BC. The site can only be visited as part of a guided tour. These tours begin 400 metres away at the Herrenberg Visitor Mine or at the Hunsrück Fossil Museum.

The Herrenberg Visitor Mine is currently closed until further notice. The visitor mine and the adjoining fossil museum present the history of slate mining as well as fossils from the region that are approximately 400 million years old. The medieval ruins of Schmidtburg Castle are located in the Hahnenbach Valley in the area of neighbouring Schneppenbach in the Rhine-Hunsrück District.

Hiking

In 2012, the Hahnenbach Valley Tour received the award for “Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail”. The Hahnenbach Valley Tour dream trail is a premium hiking trail in the Hahnenbach Valley near Bundenbach, Woppenroth and Schneppenbach.

The Hahnenbach Valley Tour leads through the Hunsrück cultural landscape and past the fossil museum, the Herrenberg Visitor Mine and the reconstructed Altburg settlement. From the nearby starting point, the entrance to the Hahnenbach Valley Tour is approximately one kilometre or a 15-minute walk away.

Activities

The Herrenberg Visitor Mine offers a hands-on slate-splitting activity: visitors can buy a piece of slate and borrow a hammer and chisel. Slate splitting is suitable for children of primary-school age and older.
