Herrstein: Hotels and Accommodation

Herrstein is known in the Nahe-Hunsrück region as a largely preserved medieval town. The historic town center is home to numerous restored half-timbered houses dating from 1600 to 1800.

Culture and History

Herrstein’s local history museum is housed in a school building dating from 1848/49. The exhibition in the basement explores the geology and the prehistory and early history of the Herrstein area.

The museum includes a fully functional former communal bakehouse, known locally as a Backes. Traditional baking practices in the former bakehouse include baking the original Hunsrück farmer’s bread made with sourdough.

Herrstein was first mentioned in a document on April 9, 1279. In 1428, the Count of Sponheim granted Herrstein town rights.

A tour of discovery through Herrstein includes the clock tower, the castle, the church, the town wall with its moat, the belfry and Schinderhannes Tower, as well as the defensive walkway.

Paths and Landscapes

The Medieval Trail begins in Herrstein’s medieval town center. Herrstein is both the starting point and the destination of the approximately 8.5-kilometer-long Medieval Trail.

The route runs mostly along natural paths; 72 percent of its length consists of natural surfaces. Its features include streams, forest edges, rock formations, and viewpoints.

The Hunsrück has extensive forests and more than 1,000 kilometers of signposted hiking trails. The area around Herrstein along the German Gemstone Route offers landscapes to explore.

Practical Information

Near the historic town center, Herrstein provides three motorhome parking spaces. The spaces can be reached via the B41 and then the L160 through Fischbach.
