Hiking and Cycling
Sensweiler is considered a starting point for cycling tours; an e-bike is recommended because of the many climbs. From here, Erbeskopf, Idar-Oberstein, Herrstein, Birkenfeld and Morbach can be reached via routes that are partly signposted. These routes use many forest and field paths and only a few roads.
Stage 2 of the National Park Cycling Route runs via Wirschweiler and Sensweiler towards Mörschied. The stage is considered a route for sporty e-bike riders and covers 68.0 kilometres with 980 metres of ascent.
Culture
The Protestant church in Sensweiler is considered one of the oldest in the surrounding area. Its small bell is one of the oldest surviving bells in Germany. Of the church’s three bells, the smallest was probably cast at the beginning of the 13th century, possibly even before 1200. Its inscription was formed by hand using wax threads rather than made with stencils.
Four stone heads were uncovered beneath the plaster on the church’s exterior wall. The building also includes an old chancel tower with two Romanesque windows, a small Romanesque entrance door, a Gothic sacrament niche and a rib vault. The middle section of the church tower may have served as a fortified tower.
Routes and Stations
The eight stations of the Köhler-Liesel National Park Family Tour explore nature and culture around Langweiler and Sensweiler. They include stations on charcoal production and Hunsrück gemstones, a rest area with a barbecue shelter and insect house, as well as a biodiversity garden. The tour also includes views of the Steinbach Reservoir and a fruit meadow and insect quiz.
The barrier-reduced Köhler-Liesel National Park Family Tour begins and ends at the foot of the Usarkopf and on the wooded ridge of the Idar Forest.
The WasserWissensWerk at the Steinbach Reservoir offers an exhibition rally, a water laboratory, an information trail and a water playground.
