Hohenburg: Views and castle history
Hohenburg Castle rises above Homberg/Efze on a basalt cone. From there, views extend to the Habichtswald, Knüll Nature Park and the forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. This location brings together a distinctive geological foundation and sweeping views across a variety of landscapes.
Hohenburg Museum presents 7,000 exhibits from various periods in the castle's history. Its permanent exhibition covers the reconstruction of the castle, its history up to its destruction during the Thirty Years' War, the construction and clearing of the castle well, and life at the castle. The exhibition therefore offers a look at Hohenburg, from its architectural history to aspects of everyday life at the time.
The castle well is another highlight in its own right: it was once dug 150 metres deep into the basalt, making it one of the deepest wells in Germany. A lighting system and an automatic water feature illustrate its depth. The display thus combines the well's historical significance with its impressive depth.
Town Church and historic traces
The Protestant St. Mary's Town Church is a Gothic architectural monument. Construction of the three-aisled hall church began around 1340. Its particular historical significance goes beyond its architecture: the Homberg Synod was held here in 1526, which is why the church is also known as the Reformation Church.
The climb up the tower involves 217 steps. The guided tour also includes a visit to the historic tower keeper's apartment, from which you can enjoy views across the town. The tour thus combines the climb with a glimpse inside a historic living space and a bird's-eye view of Homberg/Efze.
Another surviving testament to the town's history is the New Gate. It is the only town gate in Homberg/Efze that has survived to this day. Lochbach Gorge and annual events
