Neukirchen lies on the southwestern slope of the Knüll Mountains, on the edge of the Schwalm region. The town belongs to the Schwalm-Eder district in Hesse. The Grenff flows through Neukirchen; above the town, the Buchenbach flows into it, while the Urbach flows into the Grenff within the town's boundaries.

In the wider regional surroundings of Neukirchen is the Knüll Mountains, a range of low mountains in northern Hesse. Its higher elevations are sparsely populated and heavily forested, while the gently rolling foothills are strongly shaped by agriculture.
Culture and History
The local history museum is housed in a former Latin school dating from 1768 and presents aspects of earlier life in the Schwalm region. It is located in two half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries and displays more than 6,000 objects, including Schwalm traditional costumes and handicrafts, historic domestic interiors, and workshops representing more than ten trades.
In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Neukirchen was an important center of lace production in Germany.
Herzberg Castle is located in the surroundings of Neukirchen. In the wider regional surroundings are Neuenstein Castle, Ludwigseck Castle, Homberg, the Münchmühle Memorial, Auerberg, Prinzessingarten, and Baumgartskopf.
