Trails through fields, streams and woodland
The “Around Rommelsberg” Fable Trail begins in the village centre of Rengshausen and leads past meadows and fields into the woodland. Its route therefore moves from open areas into forested terrain. The Beisetal nature and forest education trail runs alongside the stream and through the woodland between the Knüllwald districts of Niederbeisheim and Rengshausen. Its 14 stations provide information about nature, culture and the landscape of the Beisetal. A water play area with a water wheel and water pump is located right by a ford; seasonal conditions may affect its use. Before setting out, check for temporary route notices.
Nature and cultural attractions in Knüllwald
The Hutewald Trail near Knüllwald-Rengshausen is in Knüll Nature Park. Gnarled old trees shape the nature experience along the trail. Another destination is the ruins of Wallenstein Castle, situated on a mountain spur below the Babloh in Knüllwald. Its setting gives a visit a historic and scenic focus that differs from the streamside and woodland trails.
The small half-timbered church in Knüllwald-Reddingshausen is a cycling church right on the Efzetal Cycle Route R17 and is open in summer. The dates of its summer opening may vary from year to year, so check the current dates before visiting. The seasonal Wallenstein natural swimming pool has a non-swimmers’ pool and a children’s pool, as well as a slide and water play equipment. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening status in advance.
Regional context: Schwalm-Eder District
The Schwalm-Eder District includes upland landscapes around the Knüll, Kellerwald and Habichtswald ranges. The Malerstübchen Museum in Willingshausen focuses on 19th- and 20th-century art history and paintings featuring the traditional costume of the Schwalm region. The museum also displays traditional Schwalm rural crafts, including whitework embroidery, knitting and spinning. Expert-led tours include talks on the artists’ colony and its artists, Schwalm customs and traditional crafts.
The Schwalm Cycle Route is another regional highlight. It is around 100 kilometres long and runs mostly along paved or surfaced paths through river landscapes of meadows, fields, villages and half-timbered towns. The route leads to the point where the Schwalm flows into the Eder, just before Felsberg in the Schwalm-Eder District. The local trails in Knüllwald and the longer cycle route therefore offer distinct landscapes and route types.
