Sonnen is located in the Danube Forest region of the Lower Bavarian Forest, at elevations between 700 and 900 meters. Großer Rathberg and Kleiner Rathberg are located in the immediate vicinity of Sonnen.
Staffelberg and Spitzenberg are located in the surrounding area. Sonnen has more annual sunshine than most other municipalities in eastern Bavaria. At the same time, its elevation brings harsher winters than in the lower-lying areas around Passau; a strong, cold northeasterly wind known as the Böhmwind can also occur.
